FirstBank of Nigeria has introduced facial biometric technology to its mobile app, FirstMobile, eliminating the need for debit cards during sign-up.
With this update, users can now register and activate their devices using facial recognition instead of physical card details.
The new system also includes anti-spoofing detection to block impersonation and fraud attempts.
“This will undoubtedly enhance our customers’ digital experience,” said Chukwuma Ezirim, Group Executive of E-Business and Retail Products at FirstBank.
Until now, registering on FirstMobile required card verification—creating challenges for many users.
With biometric access, more people can onboard easily, including:
- Customers without existing debit cards
- Diaspora users who lack access to local tools
- Card-free users by choice
- Those with expired or lost cards
- Anyone facing card verification issues
The goal is to make digital banking faster, safer, and more inclusive.
“We are dedicated to providing our customers with cutting-edge solutions that make banking simpler, faster, and more accessible,” Ezirim added.
“Our goal is to ensure that every interaction with FirstBank enhances customer satisfaction.”
The FirstMobile upgrade comes with more than just facial recognition.
The new version also includes:
- Virtual credit cards for secure online payments
- Instant activation for new credit cards
- Salary advance options with flexible repayment
- App improvements and bug fixes for smoother performance
Users can download or update the app via the Google Play Store or Apple Store.
FirstBank recommends that returning users re-download the app to access all the new features.
By moving beyond card-based verification, the bank is opening its platform to more users and strengthening security at the same time.
