Clara Wanjiku Odero, a former Flutterwave employee, has lost her appeal for $900,000 in damages against the fintech firm. The case stemmed from her departure in 2018, during which she claimed emotional distress and reputational harm due to Flutterwave not removing her contact information from its M-Pesa Paybill account.
Customers continued reaching out to her, causing significant distress, according to Odero. However, the Kenyan Court of Appeal upheld a lower court’s ruling, awarding her only Ksh. 250,000 (about $2,500)—far less than she sought. Justice Alexander Muasya noted the original award was justified, stating there was insufficient evidence for her claims of reputational damage and emotional distress. The court also mandated that she pay Flutterwave’s legal costs for the appeal.
Flutterwave, valued at over $3 billion, acknowledged the oversight in updating Odero’s contact details but denied any bullying allegations made against its CEO, Olugbenga Agboola. The company emphasized its commitment to a safe work environment and stated that it takes such allegations seriously.
