Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing (IVM) just announced the launch of its first locally produced electric vehicle.
Cornel Osigwe, IVM’s Head of Communications and Corporate Affairs shared the achievement via Facebook.
Osigwe revealed that the electric vehicle, manufactured at IVM’s state-of-the-art production facility in Nnewi, Anambra State, represents a leap forward for the country’s automotive sector. “I just test-drove the first Innoson electric vehicle produced in Nnewi. We are just starting,” he said.
While specific details such as pricing, production numbers, and the commercial release date remain undisclosed, the initial batch has already been sold out.
According to Osigwe, the response has been overwhelming. “Since posting the video, we’ve received hundreds of calls and upfront payments from interested clients who want to be the first to drive the Innoson Electric Vehicle,” he shared.
“The first set which are few in numbers are now currently sold out.”, he added.
This move by IVM marks the company’s first attempt at electric vehicle production, positioning Nigeria on the map of sustainable automotive technology.
Electric vehicles play a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions, which account for over 15% of global energy-related emissions, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).
Globally, the electric vehicle market has grown rapidly in recent years. By 2023, electric passenger cars represented 18% of new car sales, a figure that reflects the increasing shift toward cleaner, more sustainable transportation options.
With IVM stepping into the electric vehicle arena, Nigeria now has the potential to contribute to this global movement.
