Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa has been re-elected as Speaker, while Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda has returned as Deputy Speaker.
This comes just two months after Obasa’s impeachment and Meranda’s brief tenure as the first female Speaker of the Assembly. Obasa, who represents Agege Constituency I, was initially removed from office on January 13, 2025, over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. His impeachment led to Meranda’s historic elevation as the first female Speaker of Lagos State.
However, the Assembly has now reversed its leadership structure, re-electing Obasa as Speaker. Meranda, who resigned from the top position on Monday afternoon, has accepted her re-election as Deputy Speaker, pledging to serve the state in good faith.
The leadership crisis had created division within the Assembly, with both Obasa and Meranda previously laying claims to the Speaker position. The situation escalated when security personnel assigned to Meranda were withdrawn amid the tussle.
Obasa’s re-election marks his return to a role he has held since 2015, making him one of the longest-serving Speakers in the state’s history. Both leaders have expressed a commitment to working together for the progress of Lagos State, aiming to move past the recent leadership challenges.
