Are you under stress? Calling your mother on the phone could be as reassuring as giving her a hug. According to a University of Wisconsin–Madison study, just listening to your mother’s voice can dramatically lower stress levels by increasing the “feel-good” hormone oxytocin.
Children in the study were given stressful activities to complete before hugging or speaking on the phone with their mothers. Their oxytocin levels rose in both situations, which made them feel more at ease and comfortable. Voice contact is crucial, as evidenced by the surprising lack of effect that text messages had.
Although young girls were the primary focus of the study, experts think that children of all ages could benefit from the calming effects of a mother’s voice. The emotional connection between a mother and her kid is universal, after all. A conversation with mom can be a very effective stress reliever, whether the child is in need of reassurance or the adult is having a difficult day at work.
Researchers hypothesize that the strong emotional bond between mothers and their offspring is the source of this soothing effect. Her voice can reduce anxiety and improve emotional health by evoking sentiments of security and comfort.
The next time life becomes too much to handle, think about calling your mother. It may surprise you how much better you feel later. And for people who are unable to embrace in person, a phone call could be the next best thing.
