The Federal Government has entered into a strategic partnership with the United Kingdom’s Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem). This collaboration was formalized during a high-level meeting in London, attended by Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, officials from Ofgem, and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
The partnership aims to bolster regulatory oversight in Nigeria’s gas industry, aligning with the nation’s broader objectives of energy transition and sustainable development. Minister Ekpo emphasized the importance of adopting international best practices to enhance efficiency and transparency within the sector.
This collaboration aligns with Nigeria’s ongoing initiatives to modernize its gas infrastructure and regulatory environment. Notably, the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) has been instrumental in addressing infrastructural deficits, with the establishment of the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF) to finance key projects.
Furthermore, Nigeria has committed to increasing its gas production to over 5.5 billion cubic feet per day by 2030, as part of the “Decade of Gas” initiative. The collaboration with Ofgem is expected to provide technical expertise and regulatory insights to support these ambitious goals.
