Nigerian football fans are in sorrow for Peter Fregene, one of the best goalkeepers in the nation, who died at the age of 77 following a protracted illness. Fregene made his imprint on Nigerian football in the 1960s and 1970s, playing for the Green Eagles internationally, including at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico.
The death of Fregene was confirmed by his friend and former teammate Segun Odegbami, who disclosed that Fregene had been on life support for a week before dying quietly in front of his wife Tina and two of his kids. Fregene’s name will live on in Nigerian football history despite his health issues, as he was instrumental in several competitions, including the 1982 African Cup of Nations.
His skill between the posts made him a legend, and his admirers and former teammates are honoring him. Although an era has come to an end with Fregene’s departure, his contributions to Nigerian sports will continue to motivate coming generations.
