Renowned Nigerian musician and songwriter Onyeka Onwenu, affectionately known as the ‘Elegant Stallion,’ died on Tuesday night while performing at a birthday party in Lagos. She was 72.
According to family sources, Onyeka had just finished performing at a private event celebrating the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli of Emzor Pharmaceuticals when she slumped upon returning to her seat. Despite immediate medical attention, she was pronounced dead at Reddington Hospital on Victoria Island.
The cause of her death has not been determined.
Onyeka Onwenu had a distinguished career spanning four decades, leaving an indelible mark on Nigeria’s music and cultural landscape. A versatile artist, she excelled as a singer, songwriter, actress, journalist, and politician. Her music blended genres like highlife, reggae, and pop, often addressing social and political issues.
Some of her iconic songs include ‘One Love,’ ‘Iyogogo,’ and ‘Ekwe.’ Beyond music, Onyeka was a dedicated advocate for women’s rights and political causes. She served as Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development and the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture.
Earlier this year, Onyeka announced plans to produce a film about her life and career, sharing her experiences in the Nigerian music industry. She also intended to collaborate with emerging artists on a new collection of her classic songs.
Onyeka Onwenu’s untimely passing has left a void in Nigeria’s music and cultural communities. Her powerful voice, insightful lyrics, and commitment to social causes will continue to inspire generations to come
