Nigerian street-hop artist, Small Doctor is making the news one again, this time, not for a successful song or a live performance. Known for his upbeat vibes and catchy lingo, the musician has expressed concern over the rising rate of drug misuse among young people in Nigeria.
Small Doctor posted a heartbreaking story on his X (previously Twitter) page after visiting his former Lagos area. He claimed that what he witnessed troubled him. Slouching in corners, sleeping while standing, or obviously under the influence of narcotics were young individuals, some of whom he had grown up with. “Na my age mate dey like this,” he lamented in disbelief.
This was more than just ranting. Six years ago, Fuji musician K1 De Ultimate advised him to think about opening a rehabilitation facility, according to Small Doctor. He didn’t heed the counsel back then. However, after observing the current situation, he now thinks that establishing such a facility may not only be a prudent financial decision, but also a community lifeline.
Since then, the singer’s post has gone viral, igniting discussions among young Nigerians concerning substance misuse. Numerous admirers praised him for raising his voice and encouraged other members of the entertainment business to use their positions to promote change.
Small doctor’s request serves as a warning. Celebrities like him are starting to understand that their words matter outside of the stage, even though music is still a potent influencer.
This is about a generation’s future. And now is the moment to take action, if the streets are any indication.
