The X accounts of Lara and Tiffany Trump were hacked on Tuesday and used to promote a fake Solana-based meme coin. The hackers targeted the Trump family to promote a fraudulent token linked to Donald Trump’s new decentralized finance project, World Liberty Financial.
On September 4, the perpetrators compromised Tiffany Trump’s X account, using it to promote the fake token WL as the official currency for the Trump family’s project.
The hackers even shared a contract address and a Telegram channel to make the scam appear legitimate.
Tiffany Trump’s account was then used to endorse a similar tweet from Lara Trump’s account, further spreading the scam.
Before the tweets were deleted by the Trump family, the post had already received over 30,000 views. Eric Trump and the official World Liberty Financial X account quickly warned the public about the hack.
“ALERT: Lara’s and Tiffany Trump’s X accounts have been hacked. Do NOT click on any links or purchase any tokens shared from their profiles,” the World Liberty account tweeted.
Eric Trump added that the compromised accounts were locked down minutes after the fake posts were made.
However the damage had been done as the tweets had already gained significant traction.
The fake promotion had a noticeable impact on the market. The price of the fraudulent token surged to an all-time high of 0.005314 SOL before crashing by over 90%.
This is not the first time a fake meme coin has been linked to the Trump family.
Earlier this year, a similar scam involving the DJT token led to a rug pull, with the Trump family neither confirming nor denying any connection.
