X, formerly Twitter, is testing the waters of live streaming as part of its transformation into an “everything app.” On January 7, 2025, Elon Musk showcased the platform’s streaming capabilities by live-streaming himself playing a video game. The 1-hour 38-minute stream drew significant attention, with viewers engaging actively in the comment section.
This experiment could make X’s potentially challenge established live streaming giants like Amazon’s Twitch and Google’s YouTube. Musk’s casual interaction with viewers demonstrated the platform’s ability to offer a seamless and engaging live streaming experience.
The test also fits in with Musk’s vision for X, aiming to evolve beyond text and video posts. Live streaming could become a cornerstone feature, positioning X as a serious contender in the space. First outlined in 2023, Musk hopes to develop X into a multifaceted platform combining elements of YouTube, LinkedIn, FaceTime, and even banking.
“We’re rapidly transforming the company from what it was, Twitter 1.0, to the everything app,” Musk said.
This recent test follows Musk’s October 2023 live stream of Diablo IV. That Stream attracted 1,300 viewers without prior notice and accumulated 20,000 views despite technical issues like flickering and audio glitches. The 2025 stream showed marked improvements, garnering millions of views. This places X as a potential new player in the live streaming arena.
